Style SOS : Can you mix different patterns in the same look?
Can we wear different patterns: polka dots, checks, stripes, floral in the same look? For example, can you wear a striped shirt with a checkered sports jacket or suit? My mission being to simplify the style for men I decided to share with you 3 rules to follow to simplify your life.
Yes, provided you comply with the following three basic rules:
– Mix the proportions!
– At least one in three items (shirt, tie and jacket) should look solid when you look in the mirror.
– Remember “less is more”. To avoid looking like a “Christmas tree” limit your look to 3 colors.
Mix the proportions!
For example, if you are wearing a windowpane suit, avoid wearing a plaid shirt. Prefer a micro pattern shirt like gingham.

At least one in three items should look solid
At least one in three items (shirt, tie and jacket) should look solid when you look in the mirror. Chances are if your suit or jacket is patterned and so is your shirt you will want to choose a solid tie.
- Patterned suit + patterned shirt = solid color tie
- Patterned suit + patterned tie = solid color tie
- Patterned shirt + printed pattern tie = solid color suit
Remember less is more.
To avoid looking like a “Christmas tree” limit your look to 3 colors. Dark blue and light blue count as one color.
Note, however, that there are some exceptions to the rule. This is one of them.
